Highland Park Village, the first planned shopping center in the entire United States, sits within the high-end neighborhood of Highland Park in Dallas, Texas. Designed in the Mediterranean Spanish style and built on the site in 1931, it became the prototype for the development of planned shopping centers nationwide.
So, with its unified architectural features facing a central parking area, the former cattle trail—now known as the prestigious Preston Road—became the site for this novel shopping concept. And, in 1986 this landmark development received national recognition. The Park Cities Historical Society presented the center with a bronze plaque in recognition of the center’s historical and architectural uniqueness. The National Register of Historic places added Highland Park Village in 1998.
And Texas History Too
The first retail establishment was a fuel station. Then a grocery store came in. In 1934, the addition of the Village Theatre marks the first luxury suburban theater. And, it was the very first Texas theater to boast air conditioning.
Architectural Features
Surrounding the central fountain, typical of Spanish plazas, you’ll find ten acres of brick paths, benches, and walkways.
